6 Tips for Choosing the Correct Downspout Boot for Your Job

Cast iron downspout boots provide a highly effective, incredibly durable drainage connection that enhances the exterior appeal of any building. However, when a downspout boot of incorrect size, configuration or product features is selected and installed on a project, the result can be unsatisfactory. Careful consideration must be given to procure or specify the downspout boot that best conforms with the building drainage system and the aesthetics of the building.

Below are 6 keys for selecting the downspout boots that fit your project requirements:

  1. What size are the downspouts?
A common mistake, and one that leads to particularly undesirable results, is installing a downspout boot with a top bell that does not match the size of the incoming downspout. When the top bell of the downspout boot is too small in comparison to the downspout draining into it, extra labor is required to field modify the downspout which reduces flow capacity and simply looks bad. On the other hand, when the top bell of the downspout boot is too large in relation to the downspout, the result is a large void between the top bell of the boot and the much smaller downspout feeding in. This scenario is not only unsightly but may lead to debris accumulation or tampering when located in areas with high foot traffic.

Top bell sizes for downspout boots are listed nominally with true dimensions that allow enough play for the downspout to enter (e.g. a 5 x 5 top bell matches a 5” x 5” downspout). It is critical to select a downspout boot with a top bell that corresponds with the downspout size. And remember, custom sizes are available!

  2. Use the appropriate outlet style
Once the top bell is properly sized, it is critical to make sure the correct outlet style is selected to tie in with underground piping. Most applications consist of a vertical drainage connection which requires the Offset outlet style. When there is limited elevation to work with, the N-Series (90-deg) outlet is ideal, connecting horizontally into the drainage pipe. Angular (45-deg) outlets are commonly used for underground connections where the downstream drainage pipe ties in at a 45, and serve above ground discharge applications as well.

  3. Select the correct length for the application
The length of the downspout boot is a key factor in determining the level of protection that is achieved on the building. Areas with high foot traffic – building entrances, entertainment venues, public transportation centers – are often going to require a boot that extends 3 feet or more up the building wall. Similarly, youth sports facilities with a heightened risk of incidental damage typically require a downspout boot at least 5 feet above grade. Alternatively, the sole objective for some downspout boot applications is to make a successful drainage transition from the downspout to the drainage pipe, in which case the shortest available length may be selected. Keep in mind, if the boot features an on-body cleanout it needs to be a long enough size to allow the entire cleanout to be installed above grade.

  4. Consider the cleanout option
The on-body cleanout provides convenient access to the downspout boot, the upstream downspout and the downstream piping system, for maintenance and inspection. In choosing a boot with cleanout it is imperative to select a downspout boot long enough to make sure the entire cleanout will be installed above grade. Needless to say, a cleanout port that is 50% covered in concrete will may lead to unhappy maintenance workers!

  5. Coating and aesthetic options
Various coating options are available and should be selected based on the aesthetic requirements of the project. Bare cast iron is a highly corrosion resistant material that does not require a coating to resist the effects of weathering. The uncoated cast iron option also provides a 100% maintenance free finish, whereas coated products will inevitably chip, fade and scar over time.

That being said, many projects require the downspout boots to bring a specific aesthetic to the building exterior. Whether they need to blend in and match the connecting downspout or provide a visual contrast with a more noticeable appearance, several options exist for high quality coatings. Powder coating is offered in a wide range of nearly 200 unique colors. J.R. Hoe uses a proprietary 2-coat system including a military grade zinc-epoxy base coat for all downspout boots. Factory primer coating is an excellent option as well that provides the added flexibility of painting the downspout boots on site using a conventional paint of the customer’s choosing.

  6. Are special features, or an entirely custom boot, required?
Some projects may require a modified downspout boot design or perhaps an entirely custom downspout boot. Perhaps the mounting ears need to be moved up or down, the cleanout made larger and relocated, or the top bell resized for an odd downspout size. At J.R. Hoe all of these modifications are easily achieved by our engineering team. And don’t forget about our custom logo capability!

When an entirely custom design is required we rely on our talented steel fabrication division. Offered in stainless steel, aluminum and powder coated carbon steel, fabricated downspout boots are ideal for projects requiring a design that deviates significantly from the standard cast iron options. By designing and fabricating the downspout boot as a welded product the tooling costs typically associated with the casting process are avoided. As an AISC Certified Fabricator, J.R. Hoe is an industry leader in the fabrication of specialty drainage products like downspout boots.
Downspout boots provide excellent durability, performance, and aesthetics in a building drainage system. In order to get the full value of including downspout boots on a project it is important to consider all product features and options available to select the correct downspout boot for the job. At J.R. Hoe we are committed to assisting customers and specifiers in finding the ideal downspout connection product for the project, every time.
